On how I’m a movie whore.

I’ve been a lover of anime for ages…I’ve watched some oldschool anime, but I’d have to say my career started with stuff like Digimon when it aired on American television. Over time, my tastes have changed, my perceptions widened, and my dedication deepened. However, one thing has remained the same: my insane, illogical love for anime movies.

I won’t go into huge detail, but I spent the majority of the day working on a new MyAnimeList page for typeZERO, and by the time I got done my list contained 52 watched anime movies (that I can remember). Now, I’m sure there are people out there who have seen much more than me, but…so what. Compiling that huge ass list brought up a ton of nostalgia. That combined with a couple of new trailers I found on the web convinced me that I needed to warn you: you’re gonna find movie reviews here.

But before any reviews and deep discussions get underway, here’s a preview of seven upcoming movies to look out for this year and my impressions from the trailers. I don’t have a lot of information on these movies so just consider this a sort of visual heads-up until more details appear.

*Trailers are posted within spoiler tags to be more visually appealing…simply click the “Show” link to access them. Enjoy!

The Five Killers

Show ▼

This movie’s got me thinking Kill Bill meets Blood+ meets Ergo Proxy. Apparently it’s a showdown between 5 of the world’s top killers and the world’s greatest assassin. Doesn’t sound too crazy on plot, but it does seem to promise plenty of action. The fact that one chick is codenamed: Vampire also gives me the hope that this will be more than just a typical shoot ‘em up. Gonzo’s at the helm, so that doesn’t seem to offer much hope/optimism, but I’ll watch this if I get my hands on it anyway.

The Sky Crawlers

Show ▼

Lots of ups and downs here and they go as follows:
Up #1: WB logo - I’m thinking “sweet, WB/Disney stuff is usually a damn good watch”.
Down #1: Planes - I usually hate movies with planes.
Down #2: Ghost in the Shell - The four words that automatically put me in the land of pessimism.
Up #2: Production Quality - Right off the bat I notice that this anime is freaking gorgeous.
Down #3: First half of the trailer - Booooooriiiiiiiing.
Up #3: Second half of the trailer - All of the sudden there are what appear to be clips of some of the sickest n’ slickest dogfights I have ever seen. Read Down #1 and then process this: dogfights so sweet looking, I want to see them.
Up #4: Production I.G. logo - it = WIN.

I have no idea what this movie is about, but it’s way too pretty for me to pass it up. I hate anything with G.I.T.S. on it, but this trailer has me itching to get a hold of this movie. I hope it ends up being worth it.

Naruto Shippuden Kizuna

Show ▼

Naruto and Sasuke finally team up again in this movie because it’ll never happen in the anime! Whatever. I just watched the first Shippuden movie, and despite it’s flaws I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It was supremely better than the anime if nothing else…might as well get the best Naruto fix you can.

Eve no Jikan

You know what I like most about this trailer? The music. I’m incredibly intrigued by this movie…I’m not sure why, but everything seems to point me in the direction of this being one of those bittersweet movies in the vein of The Girl Who Lept Through Time. Especially that first music track…it’s epic, sad and hopeful all at the same time. Would it be weird to say I can already feel the effect this movie will have on me?

Coluboccoro

Ghibli meets Pokemon? Definitely looks like a more kids oriented movie, but that’s never stopped me before! I absolutely love Ghibli style movies (’cept for that stupid ass dragon one…boring!), and once I get a few reviews up on some of those, you’ll understand why I’m excited about this movie.

Genius Party Beyond

Show ▼

This movie is broken up into segments, so I’ll drop a few comments on each one.
#1 Gala - I’m seriously stoked about this segment. Why? Because it reminds me of Spirited Away.
#2 Moondrive - The art style threw me off at first, but by the time the clip was over I was in love with it. Looks like a sexier version of Dead Leaves.
#3 “Wanwa” The Doggy - Looks cracked out like the dream sequences in Paprika. But it also looks kinda dumb.
#4 Toujin Kit - The movie about the future of the robot/doll thing from Clannad? This clip makes me think more of video games than movies. Mixed feelings at the moment.
#5 Dimension Bomb - Wicked. Looks gorgeous and I was actually a bit creeped out by a few of the images that flashed by at the start. I really want to get some more details on this segment ASAP.

Cencoroll

Show ▼

WOW. Now that was fscking awesome. Tons of weird stuff going on, fantastic animation, gorgeous character designs, sick nasty soundtrack…I don’t have a clue what’s going on, but I WANT TO SEE THIS! Easily my most anticipated upcoming film.

damn, killer post. Like always, you gotta outdo yourself, don’t get too tired of it, it rocks the socks man.

  2. Fye_Dx / May 4, 2008

    Whoa, nice post!
And btw, Cencoroll look’s pretty interesting to me. I haven’t watched anime movies in a while now, but I think that one will be watched on the release day! XD

  3. IKnight / May 4, 2008

The one I’m anticipating most is The Five Killers, ‘cos of my taste for action. I hadn’t heard of Cencoroll, though, but now I’ve seen that trailer I’ll be keeping an eye out for it.

  4. blissmo / May 4, 2008

Looking forward to seeing them! I never knew you went on MAL! I shall add you!

  5. Myu / May 4, 2008

The Five Killers, Eve no Jikan and Cencoroll are so on my list. Cencoroll reminds me somewhat of Bokurano and even Dennou Coil, in a way, but I do think it’s safe to say I’ve never seen anything like it. Bloody awesome.

  6. Hoshi / May 4, 2008

dunno any of the others, but i saw the trailer for Cencoroll already, and fell in love with it. =] i’m definitely seeing it

^ i agree with Myu a little. Cencoroll reminds me a little of Dennou Coil
PS. oh shit. i’m definitely watching Five Killers. =P

  7. Runningkid / May 4, 2008

Sky Crawler looks really promising. Planes firing pew pew guns at each other, not to mention the amazing animation.

I often enjoy a good film too, but I think a film is a bit short to have as much impact as, say, a series will have. That’s why I like films which is an extention or continuation of a series.

    @ Exodus
Man, I feel at home here…freaking loving it.

    @ Fye_DX
Anime movies rock…I’ll harass you via MSN with some good ones.

    @ IKnight
I’m pretty sure a lot of people would cry “Gonzo” on The Five Killers, but I’m in the same boat with you…I wan to see it for teh action.

    @ blissmo
I’ll be throwing up reviews as soon as I see them. I added you on MAL as well. Prepare to be harassed!

    @ Myu
Eve no Jikan looks sick. Cencoroll does give off a sort of Dennou Coil Vibe with the weird looking creatures and such. But damn it looks hawt.

    @ Hoshi
I’m glad you followed me to typeZERO! Five Killers, eh? Who’s your favorite character from the trailer?

    @ Runningkid
I wasn’t all that hyped about Sky Crawlers until I watched the trailer a few times…then I started noticing the little details. It was like watching 5 Centimeters Per Second or Place Promised in Our Early Days. That movie is going to be breathtaking. You should ask me for some films with impact…I’d love to prove you wrong. Hehe.

  9. KaeBoo / May 4, 2008

Quite interesting…  I may have a chance to watch some of these.
    Thanks for the heads up.
    :)

  10. Fye DX / May 5, 2008

Don’t you harass me Riex! Don’t you dare haressing me!

I’ll stab you. With my mind….

  11. Hoshi / May 5, 2008

lols. I think you should know already. The SWORDSMAN definitely!!!

  12. Valen / May 20, 2008

The Five Killers interests me because of the aforementioned action but also because of the fact that it is written by, or atleast the original script was written by, Mark Waid. That alone is enough to draw me to it. Hopefully whoever touched the script afterwards does not screw it up.
