OP Champs: May 08

For details on what OP Champs is all about, check out the description on the features page. Don’t forget to rate the post if you liked it (or hated it).

I’m a rocker at heart, but you’d be surprised how many non-rockish songs just obliterate the competition when it comes to anime music. Let’s see who takes the cake this month.

Videos are contained within spoiler tags to make the post all pretty like. Just click “Show” to view them…click “Hide” if they wind up scaring you.

#3: Bleach

Haha! A rock song slides in at #3. The song is CHU-BURA by Kelun, and it jumps right into a sing-along quality verse, to an even more catchy chorus. I find myself mumbling gibberish trying to sing along every time I open a new episode of Bleach. As for the animation…I’d like to call it “feel-good” Bleach. It reminds me of the younger days of Bleach, when everything was still new and exciting and…fascinating (yes I did just Bleach + fascinating). To top it all off, did you see Rukia’s hair!? <3

#2: Romeo x Juliet

I just started watching Romeo x Juliet (spoil me and you WILL DIE) for reasons that will be divulged in a future post (soon). I’ve heard the English version of You Raise Me Up (sung by…Josh Groban?), but I’ve got to say that this version, sung by Lena Park, completely pwns the other one. I mean…watch that and try tell me that you weren’t captivated by her voice and all the lovey-dovey-ness of Romeo and Juliet. I’ll call you a liar. The clouds, the sky, the hopeful expressions…stop toying with me damn it! I know this is a tragedy (Riex doesn’t want to cry!).

#1: Vampire Knight

I freaking LOVE this song. It’s like audio crack. “Akaku akaku akaku yurete…yume no yume no hate e deatte!” I love how it starts off all gansta right in the beginning with that drum beat. Then it just jams out for a bit before rocking right back into that kickass chorus. It’s soooo easy to pick up and sing along to as well. I’m going into a whole rant on Vampire Knight sometime in the future so I’ll hold it in for now…but I will say, Yuuki + purple dress is fine with me. Oh yeah, the song is Futatsu no Kodou to Akai Tsumi (geeze) by ON/OFF. Go…marry it or something.

  1. I loved the new Bleach opening, and yes Rukia’s hair was really cool.  What I didn’t like was Romeo and Juliet because her voice annoyed me.  And Vampire Knight’s opening was good, but then the actual anime itself sucked.

  2. Okay for you I listened to it. And I heartily agree the new Bleach OP is very pleasant to the ears.

    They aren’t really current but.

    I’ve been watching Witchblade as it comes out on dvd here. And that has one of my favourite ending themes, ashita no te –>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyrssdU6A34
    Its very soft, pretty soothing. Although the Romeo and Juliet one is very nice.

    Another of my faves would probably be Doressu - The Bloody Trinity Mix that they used for Trinity Blood. It introduced me to Buck Tick and I have to admit I like quite a few of their tunes. That song has great mood though.

    ‘D.J’s fave line of the week - “I cut myself on my Fall Out Boy c.d’s” :D

  3. I agree with that VK’s OP is really catchy - I find myself humming it randomly!
    This latest Bleach isnt one of my favs - but its still quite good.  My fav Bleach OP is still Asterisk by Orange Range :p
    RxJ was a nice wee series - and this is definately one of the best versions of this song.
    Think my fav OP this season is either Nabari no Ou’s or Allison & Lillia’s.

  4. I’m not sure I could watch a show that used You Raise Me Up as its theme. Veeeery interesting. I too like the Soul Eater OP and Nabari No Ou’s is really cool, although Veltpunch has never impressed me much as a band up till now.

  5. @Everyone
    So much hate mail! Lol, I jk.

    @Shin
    I remember the first time I heard Ichirin no Hana…I was like “did that guy just scream!? Tiiiiiiight”. It’s definitely one of my favorite Bleach OPs, but then again, Bleach usually has good music imo.

    @Hoshi
    The Soul Eater OP doesn’t really hit my emo/screamo taste buds all that well, but I still like it. Kaiba is a good OP, but I don’t think it warrants a top spot. There are a lot of good songs, but unfortunately, a top 3 is limited to…you guessed it, 3. If it was a Top 5, Nabari would be in there.

    @Fye_DX
    How many times do I have to IM you with “VK Rocks!” before you get the point! :P Your blunt comments hurt my soul. I want to retaliate, but you’re right…the Lucky Star OP is ridiculously addictive.

    @D.J
    How have you not heard the Bleach one!? I posted it up there ^^ (just click “Show”). Same with RxJ. And yeah, the Nabari OP is sweeet too.

    @Myu
    I’ll admit it, I had to google “raburabu” (dangit!). Bleach does indeed pick great music almost all the time. I can appreciate the Soul Eater OP, but the ED garners and “ugh.” reaction out of me. Nice feedback though, thanks!

  6. I think there have been only a couple of times when I couldn’t appreciate an OP/ED of Bleach. The music they pick is superb and fits the mood extremely well. Romeo x Juliet OP is, simply put, raburabu.

    My winner this season, though, is Soul Eater, hands down. Both OP/ED (and basically everything else about the show) had me riveted to the screen from the very first second. As for other notable openings, the main motive of Persona’s OP is great. Oh, and VK is a no go for me. Makes me enter meh mode.

  7. Well I like the op for VK. I haven’t heard the current Bleach one (I’ve actually not been watching ahead on this one. I’m following the manga as it comes out here. So I haven’t been spoiling myself with the anime.)

    I don’t watch Romeo x Juliet so I haven’t heard that one.
    My fave so far is the op for Nabari no ou “CRAWL” by Veltpunch which I finally got my hands on yesterday YAY!

  8. Ok, first of all, I’m not watchin’ VK (Yet), Bleach (Kinda On-Hold) or RxJ (After this I’ll probably pick it up…). I’m okay with most of the stuff you said there, I think all of those were pretty good. As for the Bleach OP, it’s good, but not great (You talk a lot with me, you probably get what I mean… =P). I can’t really point out any other OP from the animes I’m currently watchin’ though… Of course Motteke still pwns all those… =D

  9. hmm. Stopped watching Bleach a long time ago, I only follow the manga now, but the OP seems to be pretty good. :) I think the VK OP tends to grow on me. Didn’t really like it at first, but it is easy to sing along with it lol.
    awww. no soul eater or nabari or kaiba? I think Kaiba’s OP Never would have to be my favorite OP this season :P PS. Which reminds me: Both OP and ED are out for Nabari! woot~

    9. Hoshi on May 20th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
  10. I only like You Raise Me Up out of the bunch here lawl. Anyway for Bleach, I guess my favorite would still be Ichirin no Hana by HIGH & MIGHTY COLOR, though that was around the same time I stopped watching the anime ):
